Report on our submission to the minister for education in response to pay offer 2020-21

On Wednesday 29 July 2020, education minister Kirsty Williams set out her proposals for teacher pay in Wales.

The proposals follow the publication of the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body's (IWPRB's) report.

The minister has accepted in principle all of the report’s main recommendations and proposed further enhancements to ensure teachers in Wales receive the same increase as those in England.

The proposals would see the following:

  • Starting salaries for new teachers increased by 8.48%
  • 3.1% overall increase for the teachers’ pay bill in Wales
  • 3.75% pay rise for teachers on the main pay scale
  • An end to performance-related pay progression
  • The reintroduction of national pay scales

As a result, NAHT Cymru launched a member survey to capture what these proposals will mean for head teachers, schools and the wider profession.

Today (Wednesday 16 September 2020) NAHT Cymru director Laura Doel will present this report along with further comments on the process itself to the IWPRB as part of the consultation process, which closed on 22 September 2020.

Our full response to the consultation will be available shortly.
