Starting salary £87,018 rising to £91,598 after 12 months, plus generous benefits package including £5,868 car allowance.

This is an outstanding opportunity, as a talented leader of professionals, to play a major part in the direction of a highly regarded trade union helping to shape the future of our schools and support school leaders when they need it most.

NAHT represents more than 29,000 school leaders in early years, primary, secondary/post primary and special schools, making us the largest association for school leaders in the UK.Our members consist of all categories of school leaders. We provide representation, advice and training for school leaders in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We use our voice at the highest levels of government to influence policy for the benefit of leaders and learners everywhere. 

Your role will be to lead, direct and support the delivery of our first-class representation and advice service to NAHT Members in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and overseas.

Reporting to the General Secretary, you will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team. You will manage a team of specialist advisors and assistants, as well as a team of solicitors and Regional Officers, through four direct reports.  Your objective will be to ensure the team provides expertise, judgement and assistance to members in their professional and employment roles, helping members to fulfil their responsibilities and respond to challenges and threats within tight timeframes.  The Association provides fast and effective advice to members in their professional roles and represents them to defend their working conditions – often in challenging circumstances. You will be expected to ensure the different services are always delivered to the highest standards ensuring first-class support for our members.

As an outstanding team leader and excellent communicator, you will be confident, calm and assertive in managing professional staff whose specialist knowledge may be greater than your own.  You will need to demonstrate how you have adapted your management style to a wide range of situations and audiences, as well as a commitment for quality.   You will need to understand the challenges of managing staff that are based remotely and work from home. 

Knowledge of Employment Law and Trade Union Law is essential, whilst knowledge of Education law is highly desirable. Substantial experience of working at a senior leadership level in either a human resource, employment law, education, trade union or representative function is essential. Experience of working with, or for, a Trade Union or Membership Association is highly desirable.
