Andy Mellor

NAHT President, Andy Mellor

Andy has been head teacher at St Nicholas Church of England Primary School in Blackpool for 14 years. He has taken the school from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘outstanding’, and he has grown the school from 245 pupils to 407. Following inspection, Andy became an NLE and the school was awarded teaching school status in 2017.

Andy has been a member of NAHT national executive for four years, and he is honoured to serve the profession having campaigned for a fairer funding and assessment and accountability system for schools and members. He remains treasurer for the Blackpool Branch. Andy will serve as national president from May 2018 until May 2019.

NAHT Immediate past president, Anne Lyons

Anne Lyons has been head of St John Fisher Roman Catholic Primary School in Harrow for 23 years. In that time, she has taken it from one form entry to three, from 250 to 650 children.

Anne started in primary education in the early 1970s as a maths teacher before moving into headship. Having been a member of NAHT as a middle leader and a deputy head teacher, she is proud of the support and encouragement the union gives to developing leaders. Anne has been national vice president of NAHT since September 2016, and she will be immediate past president of NAHT from May 2018 to May 2019.

NAHT vice president, Judy Shaw

Judy Shaw is head teacher at Tuel Lane Infant School in West Yorkshire. She has been a member of NAHT since 2005 and becomes NAHT vice president in May 2018.

NAHT national treasurer,  Judith Stott

Judith Stott is head teacher at Old Trafford Primary School, Manchester and has been a member of NAHT since 1995. She became NAHT national treasurer in 2016.

NAHT general secretary, Paul Whiteman

Paul Whiteman took up the role of general secretary of NAHT in September 2017, bringing with him a wealth of trade union knowledge, as well as hands-on experience of the vast range of challenges faced by school leaders. Paul joined NAHT in 2012 as director of representation and advice, with overall responsibility for the directorate that provides advice to members on management, legal and employment issues.

Having started out in retail banking, Paul soon got involved in the Banking, Insurance and Finance Union. His enthusiasm for trade unionism grew, and between 2002 and 2012, he held the position of national officer for the FDA civil service trade union.  

Born in Croydon, Paul was educated at John Ruskin High School in Croydon. He completed an MA in industrial relations and employment law at Keele University in 2000.
