NAHT's incoming president sets out bold agenda for change in education

NAHT’s president-elect Angi Gibson delivered a powerful and personal address to delegates on the opening morning of the union’s Annual Conference 2025, setting out a clear agenda for her presidency focused on action, empowerment and the needs of every child.

Opening with reflections on her personal journey into education, Gibson shared how her move from engineering into teaching was driven by a desire to do work that truly mattered. She spoke of her upbringing in a working-class community, her mother’s strength and sacrifice, and the values of hard work and honesty that continue to guide her.

Framing her speech around a simple but urgent principle: that every child has only one chance at education, she told delegates: “If I want the best for my children, I have to want it –and fight for it – for every child.” She called on school leaders to help children see beyond their circumstances and challenge the idea that the past must define the future.

Addressing the current state of education, Gibson highlighted significant pressures on the system, including recruitment and retention challenges, mental health needs, funding constraints and outdated school estates. She acknowledged the daily realities faced by school leaders and educators and praised their commitment to supporting pupils despite ongoing strain.

Angi Gibson used her platform to outline these six core priorities for NAHT’s work in the year ahead:

  • Reforming inspection and accountability frameworks
  • Improving pay and school funding
  • Addressing the recruitment and retention crisis
  • Securing investment in safe and modern school buildings
  • Strengthening support for children with SEND
  • Tackling workload and prioritising staff well-being

“These aren’t wish lists,” she said. “these are non-negotiables.”

She also pointed to the resources and campaign toolkits now available to members, emphasising that this work is part of a wider movement led by the profession itself.

In closing, Angi Gibson underlined her commitment to leading with authenticity and determination, drawing on the experiences that have shaped her career and identity. She pledged to be a president who leads with both “heart and fire”, determined to ensure that no child is left behind.

The speech marked the start of her presidential term with a strong statement of intent, and was met with a standing ovation from delegates.
