Commenting on the announcement of a new National Academy for Educational Leadership, Rob Williams, Director of Policy for NAHT Cymru, the school leaders’ union for Wales, says: “School leaders welcome the announcement by the Cabinet Secretary, Kirsty Williams, that a new National Academy for Educational Leadership is to be established in Wales. We are also pleased to see that this commitment appears to be long term.
“International evidence shows that outstanding teachers make the difference to pupils in the classroom. Outstanding leaders facilitate the spreading of outstanding practice across the whole system.
“Investing in the ongoing professional development of educational leaders is the only way to realise the ambition contained in the vast level of reform currently under way in Welsh education.
“School leaders will also welcome the new academy remaining arms-length from the Welsh Government, and that it is intended to be shaped by the profession for the profession.
“It is incumbent now upon the Welsh Government to commit the investment to ensure it is easily accessible for all educational leaders. It must also retain its professional integrity through a peer to peer approach and ensure leadership programmes are world class and quality assured.”
