Health and Safety Executive typical spot check questions and sample answers

Below is a list of typical questions HSE may ask when conducting spot checks along with some sample answers.

Local authority (LA) consultation. 

Can you name the union representative who consulted on your RA plan?

As above.

How has the risk assessment been communicated to teachers, pupils, parents?

Teachers have had an inset day, pupils and parents have received written communication.

What reviews have you undertaken?

We have a further inset day planned on …….. to review and amend if needed.

Are you able to maintain the two metre rule if not what are you doing to mitigate the risk?

Two metres is being followed as far as reasonably practicable; eg year groups are in bubbles; one way systems; staggered start, break and finish times; extra classes being held in the hall; communal areas such as the staff room are distanced. 

Do you have sufficient hand washing facilities at the school?

Yes

Do you have anti-bac available freely to teachers and pupils?

Yes

Are you aware that anti-bac needs to be 70% alcohol?

Are there surfaces that are frequent touch points – how are you cleaning them?

Describe cleaning regime

What do you do if a child or teacher develops symptoms at school?

Advise self-isolation for the staff member and their family. Inform LA and arrange a test through LA; in extreme cases where this is not possible arrange for a home testing kit from the school.

How are you communicating information to parents / staff / children about symptoms and the correct course of action if they or their family are symptomatic?

As per Welsh Government guidelines; through regular written communication.

Are you aware of the home test kits?

Yes.  Only used if there in an emergency situation

Do teachers have access to PPE?

Yes. As per guidelines and risk assessments.

What are you doing about resources which are touched?

Quarantining books, wiping down by teachers and pupils, avoidance of sharing resources where possible. Reducing how much pupils can bring into school.

How frequently are you cleaning the school?

Hourly / daily. Describe cleaning regime.
