School business leaders

NAHT’s policy work is centred around our six priority areas: inspection and accountability, pay and funding, recruitment and retention, school buildings and estates, special educational needs and disabilities and workload and well-being.

Much of our policy and campaigns work is relevant across our membership, and we therefore don’t specifically mark it for members with different roles, in different regions or working in different phases. Nonetheless, we also recognise that there can be specific challenges facing different groups of our members, and this is reflected in some of the specific work we undertake.

NAHT’s school business leaders’ sector council

The work of NAHT is overseen by its school business leaders’ sector council, a group of elected members and co-opted members from across NAHT’s SBL membership. The council steers and develops our work, so that we can effectively champion the views and needs of this part of our membership.

Policy and campaign work for school business leaders

Below are some of the current key areas of focus for NAHT in relation to our business leader members.

  • improve the pay and conditions for all school business leaders, ensuring they can be rewarded at a level similar to others in the leadership team – this includes pressing for a new national framework of terms and conditions
  • reducing workload and associated stress for school leaders by pressing government on the many drivers for this
  • raising the profile and understanding of the SBL role across the school sector, including with governors
  • ensuring all school leaders have access to ongoing, high-quality and relevant professional development throughout their careers
  • pressing government to maintain and enhance the provisions and benefits of the LGPS and TPS so that they work for now and in the future
  • supporting the sector to improve diversity in the school business leadership profession.

Keep an eye out for our termly SBL newsletters for the latest updates and information specific to our SBL members.
