NAHT signs joint statement in response to the findings of the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities

Following on from our initial response to the report released by the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities ('Sewell report'), NAHT has signed up to a joint statement in further response to the report, alongside the Educational Institute of Scotland, GMB, NASUWT, NEU, NUS and UCU.

The joint statement is clear that the findings of the report are "an insult to all those in Britain who experience racism every day of their lives" and that "the report attempts to diminish the impact of structural and institutional racism."

The statement also sets out rejection of any assertion that "blames black and brown communities themselves for inequalities because they are 'haunted' by historic, systemic racism" and  "reaffirms our determination to work together in the fight to dismantle systemic racism in all its manifestations".

You can read the statement in full below.

Next steps

NAHT's policy team will now be going through all 250 pages in detail so that we can respond fully to all the various findings and recommendations included within it.
