NAHT demands better at Labour Party Conference 2026

NAHT made the case for schools, including the priorities of our We Demand Better campaign, at this week’s Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

General secretary Paul Whiteman and assistant general secretary James Bowen – alongside our national officers Dave Woods (president), Jackie Bartley (vice-president) and Angi Gibson (immediate past president) – ensured the priorities of school leaders were strongly represented at a series of panels and in conversations with key government and sector figures.

Paul Whiteman spoke at panels or roundtables, covering topics including what Andy Burnham’s promised ‘rethink’ of education policy should cover, leader and teacher well-being, and the government’s ambition to move towards all schools being part of a trust. And at a joint-union event with education secretary Lucy Powell, he pressed home the urgent need for a more humane and proportionate inspection system.

Watch a clip of Paul speaking about inspection at the joint-union event.
