The hidden cost of leading our schools: why mental health support can’t wait

A woman dressed in a business suit is holding her face, appearing stressed in a work environment.

Leading a school is one of the most rewarding jobs, but also one of the most demanding. Every day, school leaders carry the weight of responsibility for their pupils, their staff and their communities. And too often, they carry that weight alone.

In our latest Leadership Focus magazine feature, The hidden cost of leading our schools, journalist Nic Paton explores the urgent need for nationally funded mental health support for school leaders. We highlight the inspiring Sandwell initiative, where leaders have been given access to coaching, counselling and peer support, showing exactly what’s possible when the right help is in place.

“A healthy and well leader is more likely to be an effective leader.” – James Bowen, NAHT assistant general secretary.

This isn’t just about well-being; it’s about retention, resilience and ensuring leaders can thrive, not just survive.
