I hope this issue of Leadership Focus finds you well and that you are having an enjoyable summer break so far.

For a while now, members have been asking us to tackle the ever-evolving role of technology in schools, and we’ve listened. The challenge? Knowing where to start and stop. From social media and its unwanted consequences, such as bullying, to the tricky business of managing smartphones in schools, to the very real threat of cyberattacks, the issues are complex and growing fast. And it’s not just the pupil-facing side: school leaders are navigating a digital minefield that barely existed a decade ago.

So, we decided to go big. This issue features an in-depth, wide-ranging piece that takes on all of it. We speak to members, policy experts and those leading the way on cybersecurity. Yes, there are challenges but also inspiring stories of how schools are using technology to innovate. It’s not a quick coffee read; it’s a multiple-cup feature. Bookmark it. Dip in and out. It’s one you won’t want to miss.

Also in this issue, we shine a light on something too often overlooked: the mental health of school leaders. Following a powerful motion at our Annual Conference, we explore the pressing need for government-funded, ongoing support and spotlight a pioneering pilot in Sandwell that’s building a lasting legacy.

Finally, we turn our attention to the incredible volunteers who help power NAHT. One feature celebrates our lay officials, a mixture of life members and serving members offering support at branch level, where it matters most. Another honours our emerging network of equality reps, who are helping embed diversity and inclusion into everything we do.
