Identifying and preventing homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying

This advice provides an overview of this area and links to best-practice resources from Stonewall to help you build a school that is inclusive and supports its pupils. It accompanies our advice on LGBT+ inclusion in schools.

Stonewall’s School Report 2017, a study of more than 3,700 lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) pupils across Britain found that nearly half  (45%) – including 64% of trans pupils – are bullied for being LGBT at school. You can find the full School Report 2017 here. Because homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying can have a significant impact on schools and pupils, this statistic is extremely worrying. Pupils who experience this type of bullying are more likely to miss school, are less likely to stay on in education and are less likely to feel safe, to enjoy school and to achieve.
