Today (Tues 16 Dec), school leaders’ union NAHT Cyrmu is delivering Christmas cards to the Senedd - one for every Senedd member - asking them to give the best Christmas gift to the children of Wales: to deliver fair funding and save their education.
Last week, NAHT Cymru revealed that £339m came to the Welsh Government as a result of extra education spending in England for the 2026/27 draft budget, but only £39m has been allocated to core school budgets.
This week an additional £112.8m was allocated to local government following a deal between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru, and some of that money will come to schools.
But when the Welsh Local Government Association is predicting a £137m shortfall in school budgets in Wales for the next financial year, this money will only go so far, especially when Local Authorities are also facing a £200m social care deficit.
The First Minister has since refused to answer questions on how the £339m of additional education funding has been allocated, leading to calls for urgent further budget scrutiny.
NAHT Cymru national secretary Laura Doel and president Kerina Hanson will hand deliver the cards to Senedd today.
Laura Doel said: “Christmas is a time of giving and we’re urging Welsh Government to give schools in Wales the funding they rightfully deserve.
“The money that comes to Wales for education should be spent on education, but we know most of it has never reached schools. We urgently need to know where and how it was spent – and to see greater investment going directly to pupils.
“The system is at breaking point and we’re looking at an incredibly bleak new year if something isn’t done to address the funding crisis.
“We’re urging every member of the Senedd to act this Christmas to give school children in Wales the best gift – a fully and fairly funded education.”
