How to build effective home-school partnerships

Many schools are keen to develop effective partnerships with parents.

Parentkind is the leading organisation working to support parents and schools to develop effective partnerships, offering training and guidance.

NAHT has worked with Parentkind, as well as ASCL, to develop a good practice guide for schools who want to get this right - with tips for parent groups as well as tips for schools.

The full six-page guide is available below.

Schools can use this guide with their Parent Teacher Association or Parents' Forum to consider what more they can do.

This advice document includes the following:

  • A section on the role of parents in their children’s education and how children can do better on a range of measures as a result

Ofsted evaluates schools on parent engagement under leadership and management, and it has found the most effective schools work in partnership with parents.

  • Barriers to developing an effective home-school partnership

See what parents say and what teachers say

You can build positive parental participation in the following ways:

  1. Taking a whole-school approach, including strong leadership/commitment of the head and governing body
  2. Implementing effective and regular two-way communication
  3. Providing support for home-school learning
  4. Encouraging parental participation in school life.
  • How to build an effective home-school partnership

It includes suggestions for schools and, in equal measure, parents.
