NAHT Cymru comments on ventilation measures for classrooms

Today (Monday, 30 August), the Welsh Government announced funding for CO2 monitors and ozone disinfectors for classrooms.

Laura Doel, director of school leaders’ union, NAHT Cymru, said: “This is good news, and follows education unions’ joint call for urgent action.

“However, what school leaders need to accompany the CO2 monitors is a plan of action by the Welsh Government and clear guidance on what to do if the monitors detect poor air quality. It’s vital that we address ventilation problems, not just identify them.

“With regards to the ozone disinfecting units, it is clear that the Welsh Government has taken on board the views of school leaders and is addressing the crucial issue of cleaning. It’s inspiring to see a home-grown plan to help tackle the spread of the virus, and we thank Swansea University for their pioneering work on this.

“Everyone wants a sustainable return to education this week. While there are other mitigation measures that are no longer being advised by the Welsh Government, ventilation is important for reducing the spread of the virus and reducing the extent to which staff and students are absent. A comprehensive national strategy should ensure that every classroom in Wales is properly ventilated and that school leaders have access to the necessary funds for a permanent solution.”
