Commenting as the DfE publishes analysis showing 'one-off' absences from school, e.g. on birthdays, is adding up to weeks of lost learning, James Bowen, assistant general secretary of school leaders' union NAHT, said:
“It’s so important that children are in school as much as possible. Good attendance is essential for pupils to thrive and achieve. Even on special days like birthdays, it is important children are in school. While there may be exceptional circumstances from time to time, regular or repeated ‘one-off’ absences can soon add up.
“The government’s new ‘heat map’ tool will be useful, helping schools to identify patterns of absence for individual pupils. Such practical support to tackle absenteeism is welcome.
“However, as this analysis shows, there is a limit to how much schools can influence this type of ‘just one day off’ absence and we have to be realistic about what schools can do. While there is much schools already do to encourage good attendance, ultimately, responsibility for ensuring children attend schools regularly sits with parents.
“It’s also important not to lose sight of the fact that the biggest issue for schools is pupils with persistent and consistent absence, which can be driven by far more serious and difficult to solve issues.”
