NAHT responds to study highlighting link between pupil behaviour and teachers quitting

Responding to a new report from the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), which found a link between pupil behaviour and teachers leaving the profession, Paul Whiteman, general secretary at school leaders’ union NAHT, said: “Far too many new and experienced teachers are continuing to leave the profession, and this study rightly highlights that a range of approaches are needed to address this worrying issue.

“Importantly, it recognises that improvements to pay - which has fallen enormously in real-terms since 2010 - help improve retention, and that is why we are pushing the government to restore the value of salaries through successive above-inflation increases over this Parliament.

“Heavy workload and poor wellbeing are key issues too, and school leaders tell us how they are fuelled in part by challenges outside school which can impact children’s ability to concentrate and affect their behaviour. Further investment in vital family support services, from social care to mental health, is vital.

“Crucially, this survey also identified that nearly two-thirds of teachers and leaders were considering quitting the state sector due to pressure relating to pupil outcomes and inspection. There remains real concern that the revised Ofsted framework perpetuates a high-stakes system which seriously harms wellbeing, and it will be crucial the inspectorate and government act upon feedback received through the new independent advisory panel on inspection chaired by NAHT.”
