Commenting as the government announces details of plans to expand mental heath support in schools, Paul Whiteman, general secretary at school leaders’ union NAHT, said:
“Schools have seen increasing numbers of children struggling with their mental health and wellbeing in recent years, and this expansion of school mental health support teams is a positive step towards the government’s welcome commitment of ensuring all pupils have access to help.
“Early support is crucial before problems escalate, and we have seen how these teams can play a central role in offering this.
"Following a decade in which funding for mental health services failed to keep pace with demand, it is vital that treatment and support is prioritised because we know how much of an impact positive mental health and wellbeing can have on children’s engagement and success at school.”
