NAHT Cymru comments on extension to ALN legislation implementation

Commenting as Welsh Government announces an extension to the implementation of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal Act 2018, Laura Doel, director of school leaders' union NAHT Cymru, said:

“Ensuring learners with ALN get the support they need to reach their full potential is the priority for school leaders. Our members want the transition to the new arrangements to work but we have to be realistic in the current climate. While schools continue to struggle with staff absence, we urged the Welsh Government to listen to the profession on the ambitious implementation timetables and we are pleased that the Minister has welcomed those discussions and listened to our members.

“Crucially, extending the timetable to transfer learners to the new system will not have any negative impact on children and young people. They will continue to be supported by the truly dedicated leaders, teachers and support staff who have always put their needs first, but it will allow schools the time to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for the benefit of all concerned.”
