NAHT Cymru comments on Welsh Government announcement of an end to asymptomatic testing in schools

Commenting as Welsh Government announce that from Easter they will no longer be carrying out asymptomatic testing in schools, Laura Doel, Director of NAHT Cymru said:

“We all share the desire to return to more normal way of life post-pandemic and it is reassuring that the Welsh Government continues to take a slow and steady approach to lifting restrictions.

“While we continue to be led by the medical experts over the need for asymptomatic testing, covid-19 continues to have a very real impact on our schools.

“If the government believes now is the time to roll back on asymptomatic testing, there must be a clear protocol in place for schools to follow if there is an outbreak or if staff and leaner absence reach critical levels. It cannot simply be the case that a decision is made on testing and schools have to deal with the consequences. School leaders will need the guidance and support to react quickly if the need arises.”
