NAHT believes that a truly inclusive school system must ensure that every pupil can access education, participate fully in school life and receive the support they need to thrive. This NAHT guidance has been developed to help school leaders navigate the increasingly complex area of supporting pupils with medical conditions and health needs.
Our guidance seeks to explain important aspects of the legal and regulatory framework, clarify the respective responsibilities of schools, NHS bodies and local authorities, and provides practical advice on governance and risk management – including liability insurance, healthcare plans and how multi-agency working should function effectively. It is designed to help leaders secure lawful, safe and sustainable arrangements that put the needs of children and young people first.
NAHT believes that inclusion and legal compliance go hand in hand. By ensuring that roles, responsibilities and accountabilities are clearly understood and fulfilled, schools and partner agencies can work together to deliver the highest quality support for pupils with medical conditions.
