Advice and guidance from NAHT that supports and addresses issues of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Supporting a mature workforce

As we live longer, many of us will likely have to work for longer. Research suggests that over the next five years, the number of estimated vacancies is unlikely to be filled by those leaving education/training or by migration alone, so increasingly, employers will have to rely on older workers to fill those jobs.

One of the many challenges facing school leaders is how to manage a workforce that is, on the one hand, highly valued, but on the other, maturing. This prompts school leaders to consider innovative retention strategies and ways of working that will enable the school to optimise its performance and meet the needs of maturing staff.

Find out more about NAHT's three-step approach to how schools should respond to this issue.
