December 2023 update

This briefing was provided to aid members pending the anticipated publication of guidance by the Department for Education (DfE). On 19 December 2023, the Department for Education (DfE) released a consultation on draft non-statutory guidance on gender-questioning children, which NAHT will be reviewing and responding to. You can read a summary of the draft guidance for school leaders and find out more about the consultation here

We would encourage leaders, governors, and trustees to review the draft guidance when considering any approaches, but recognise that its draft status means it is not agreed policy at this time and may change following the consultation.

Once the DfE guidance has been finalised, we will review this joint guidance accordingly.
