NAHT Cymru rejects Wrexham Council claims over school budgets

Responding to comments made by the Leadership of Wrexham Council on school budgets, Laura Doel, national secretary for school leaders' union NAHT Cymru, said:

"School leaders are very used to working within a budget. They make impossible decisions every day in order to make ends meet and try and balance the books. But - to speak as plainly as Wrexham Council - not enough money is simply never going to be enough, no matter how sensibly or creatively budgeted.

"Demand and costs have risen massively and school funding hasn't kept pace. Which means either a deficit has to be returned or things have to be cut. But those things are not easy... from ALN provision, to school supplies, to quality of school food - we invite Wrexham Council to be the ones to explain to parents exactly why their child is getting a worse deal.

"School leaders and teachers are the ones looking pupils and their families in the face every single day and making decisions on where it is most valuable and necessary to spend limited funds. They don't take that responsibility lightly and no one is 'playing politics'. They are desperately trying to meet children and young people's most pressing needs and give them the best education and start in life - despite the very real crisis in school funding in Wales."
