Mixed-age classes: planning and managing expectations

The evergreen and significant challenges faced by school leaders trying to manage school budgets and resources, as effectively as possible, can sometimes trigger and lead to a review of teaching practices and the established class structures across their schools. In some cases, where a school's resources are particularly limited, or scarce, such a review may lead to combining single year group classes into classes of pupils with a mixed-age range.
Although this approach is typical and often deployed in small schools, current budget constraints and pressures have resulted in an increasing number of schools exploring this as an option to ensure school budgets are maximised and teaching resources are deployed as effectively as possible.
In this guidance paper, we look at this growing trend to teach across mixed-age year groups.
