Paul Whiteman, general secretary of NAHT, which represents leaders in the majority of schools, said: "We congratulate Rebecca Long-Bailey on her appointment to Shadow Education Secretary; in our opinion it is the best job in the shadow cabinet. We extend our thanks to Angela Rayner for her excellent leadership as Shadow Education Secretary and look forward to continued working with her as Deputy Leader of the Labour party.
"Now is a critical time to keep education at the top of the national agenda. Currently, NAHT's members are focused on playing their part in the UK response to Covid-19 and supporting learners at this most uncertain time. Education will also be central to the mission of rebuilding the nation once this crisis is over.
"We look forward to continuing our positive and productive working relationship with Labour on education policy, not just with the front bench team but also the party's many back-bench MPs who regularly support the sector by raising important education issues in the House of Commons."
