School leaders’ union NAHT has announced an exciting new partnership with Discovery Education to deliver high quality professional and personal development online. The NAHT and Discovery Education Pathway programme is a holistic programme that supports the continuous professional empowerment of teachers and leaders in today’s schools. It is designed to help educators develop professionally and personally in their careers with empowerment, agency and positive wellbeing.
This new venture will preview on Thursday 11 June with a live webinar for NAHT members and their teams, with inspiring thought leaders providing insights into why a holistic approach to professional development is so needed today.
Paul Whiteman, NAHT general secretary, said: “It has always been important for school leaders to invest in their own development and also to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and the development of their team. Being a school leader is a tough job with very little time in the working day to find space to look after yourself. It’s a Catch-22 situation that affects just about everyone in a leadership position in a school or college. We have to put this right, especially now, at such a testing time for school leaders and their teams. Without more support, we risk burning them out.”

Launching in September, the Pathway programme is structured around three core elements, which together form a virtuous cycle of continuous empowerment throughout an educator’s professional journey. Orientation is where educators can explore what motivates them, audit their skills and competences and plot future goals and aspirations. In Navigation, participants can learn from fellow educators, school leaders and education experts through a suite of continuous professional empowerment modules – comprising films, thought-pieces and reflections – and online discussion forums. Reflection is about focusing on yourself with an exclusive Wellbeing Programme, an Advice Hub and a Professional Learning Portfolio to keep a record of your personal and professional achievements.
This brand new initiative is designed to help teachers and leaders to stay motivated, develop their skills and retain their agency in the job.
