Further meetings were held today (Tue 24 Mar) between the DfE and education unions regarding the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, including a meeting with the Secretary of State, Gavin Williamson.
After the meeting, Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said: “We’ve had a constructive meeting today with the Secretary of State. It was an opportunity for us to communicate some of the very real and pressing concerns that we know teachers and school leaders have. It is clear that he and his team are taking on board our questions and concerns.
“As a result of this meeting, we expect to see fresh guidance being issued this evening. This should incorporate expert medical advice from Public Health England and practical steps that school leaders and their teams can take in order to stay safe. This guidance will be updated as more information becomes available.
“School staff are playing a leading role in the fight against Coronavirus and it is right that the government should share with them the scientific evidence that underpins their approach and expert advice on safety precautions. We will share the government’s latest advice with members as soon as we have it, and continue to engage with the DfE whilst it is updated.”
