Responding to the announcement by children and families minister Nadhim Zahawi that supplementary funding for maintained nurseries will be extended until the end of the 2020 academic year, Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders' union NAHT, said:
"This will bring short-term respite for some maintained nurseries. Reassurances around funding until the end of the next academic year are welcome, and it is good to see the government recognising the critical role these schools play.
"However this does not represent a long-term solution and is merely one sticking plaster on top of another.
"Even with the supplementary funding arrangements in place, we know that many nurseries have been struggling to make ends meet. For those nurseries, today's announcement will provide little comfort.
"Maintained nursery leaders are so anxious about the bleak financial picture that more than 300 of them will be presenting a letter to the Chancellor on 11th March, to raise their concerns."
