Commenting on the announcement today by Education Minister Kirsty Williams that schools in Wales will not reopen on 1st June, Laura Doel, director of school leaders' union NAHT Cymru, said:
"There has been constant speculation around a return date for schools, and what a UK government announcement at the weekend could mean for Wales. Kirsty Williams has now been clear that whatever is announced on Sunday, schools in Wales will not return on the 1st of June. After a week of confusion, we welcome her unequivocal statement that leaves us in no doubt.
"NAHT Cymru has lobbied the Welsh Government to ensure the profession is represented in any decision making process and as a result the minister has invited the education trade unions to join groups of teaching colleagues and middle tier representatives looking at return to school considerations. Together we will work with the Welsh Government as they develop a plan founded on medical and scientific evidence and hold all parties to account to ensure that the health and wellbeing of school staff, children and their families remains the priority."
