Responding to a new survey from the British Council published today (Wednesday 3 July 2019), showing that pupils’ motivation to learn foreign languages has decreased as a result of Brexit, Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said:
“Whatever the outcome of Brexit, the UK will need the best educated and most productive generation possible, to take advantage of the opportunities or to repair the damage. They will need to be ready to take their place in the world as global citizens. Of course, knowledge of and a love of language are fundamental to that. If we short-change children now, if we cut back on their education now, we do so at our own risk.”
