The Education Select Committee published the report of its enquiry on tackling disadvantage in the early years on 7 February 2019.
The report covered a wide range of topics, including the government's 30 hours free childcare policy, and made a number of recommendations, including:
- the need for a clear workforce strategy from the government;
- the Department for Education (DfE) should find a way for maintained nurseries to ‘support’ private, voluntary and independent settings in an area; and
- the DfE should look again at children’s centres, having a strategy around them, and should reinstate Ofsted inspections.
The government's detailed response to that report has now been published and can be read here.
