New NAHT research shows the majority of maintained nursery schools are in the most deprived areas of the UK

NAHT is conducting research into the funding of maintained nursery schools.  In our first phase of analysis, we investigated the neighbourhoods in which maintained nursery schools sit, and found that they are often in the most deprived areas of the UK.

Using the income deprivation affecting children index (IDACI), we found:

  • 60% of maintained nursery schools are in neighbourhoods in the three most deprived IDACI deciles
  • 80% of maintained nursery schools are in neighbourhoods in the five most deprived IDACI deciles

To make sure all children are given the opportunities to succeed in later life, we must make sure our maintained nursery schools are properly resourced. Find out more about the work we are doing on campaigning for fair and sufficient funding for nursery schools here.
