NAHT Edge Advisory Council

We need to listen and learn from middle leaders. The Advisory Council gives NAHT Edge the opportunity to gain insights and experience from its members.

The Advisory Council meets four times per year.

Meet the Advisory Council

Catherine Buckby

Catherine is currently an assistant head teacher at a junior school in Swindon after relocating from Northampton. She is currently undertaking the NPQSL as part of her professional development. Catherine has led both phases within key stage two and has also been both an English and maths coordinator. She is a specialist maths teacher. She likes to read about current educational affairs and discuss the implications for these in school.

Sarah Ellis

Sarah is currently the lead teacher for English at a large generic special secondary school in West Sussex, working with students in key stage three, four and five. She spent her first years in teaching at a junior school in Watford.

She is the staff representative on the governing body for the school and for the federation her school is part of. Since being a middle leader, Sarah has instigated changes in the approach to teaching English that have increased the level of accreditation in English alongside encouraging and promoting a love of the written word and storytelling. This year, Sarah is taking part in coaching training to enable her and other middle leaders at her school to make substantial and long-term differences within the local education community.

Jon Jones

As a head of post 16 education with 19 years’ experience of teaching in a coeducational 11 to 18 secondary school in West Wales, Jon has developed a specific interest in Post 16 pedagogy including recruitment, curriculum and pastoral provision including the coordination of federated learning across three school Sixth Forms. Jon is a graduate of the RWCMD and subsequently gained an MSc in Management in Education and Training at Trinity University College and promotes the take-up and teaching of non-core subjects at Key Stages four and five.

Jon’s professional affiliations include the UCAS Wales Standing Group and Welsh Government Post 16 Funding Group, and he chairs the Heads of Sixth Form Wales Consortium and the SEREN Hub for West Wales. An active Fellow of the RSA, Jon feeds back on policy and provision across the curriculum and is engaged in addressing the reduction of NEET outcomes at 16 and 18.

Jo Payne

Jo is a year leader in a large primary school in West Sussex.  Although she specialised in primary languages during her teaching degree, she is particularly interested in how technology can enhance pupils' learning.  As well as her usual day-to-day responsibilities in school, Jo writes a blog on which she shares ideas, strategies, plans and resources she's used in her classroom.  She organises TeachMeet Sussex events around her county that bring teachers together to share simple, successful teaching ideas.  She is always trying something new and her latest project involves writing a primary version of a successful book about teaching.  Read her blog or follow her on Twitter @MrsPTeach.

Joanne Gray

Joanne, a married mother of two, lives near Omagh, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. She graduated with an honours degree in education from Queen's University Belfast and has been teaching for 21 years. She began her teaching career at a primary school in the centre of Belfast, where she later became a middle manager. During this time, she completed a master’s degree in sport, exercise and leisure sciences and a postgraduate in professional studies in education. She is currently head of whole school pastoral care at a special school in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and teaches key stage four pupils with Autism and challenging behaviour.

Lara Ginn

Lara is a middle leader at a primary school in central Slough. She’s mentored NQTs, successfully completed her NPQML and developed a ‘Teaching and Learning Team,’ which is responsible for utilising mentoring and coaching to raise the quality of teaching and learning within her school. She’s also responsible for leading seven classes in the new role of Upper School Phase Manager. Every day, at least once, Lara is reminded that being a middle leader places her in a unique position; one in which she can make a real difference to the children, families and colleagues with whom she works.
