NAHT Cymru comments on sexual harassment among learners inquiry report

Commenting as the Children, Young People and Education Committee for Wales publish the report of their inquiry into peer on peer sexual harassment among learners, Laura Doel, director of school leaders' union NAHT Cymru, said:

“Schools can play a vital role in reducing and preventing harmful and concerning sexual behaviours among children and young people, as well as dealing with any incidents which do occur. But they need properly resourced support and training to do so.

“We’re pleased to see this report recognising that schools’ role will need to be properly trained and funded, though there is a worrying tendency to focus on identifying issues and less practical support suggested for dealing with incidents.

“While schools certainly play a key role in this work, it is a wider problem that reaches far beyond the school gates. Government, health, social care, police and parents all have a significant contribution to make. The onus cannot be all on schools to solve.

“It’s also important that we create a culture where schools report and respond, not one where they’re judged if they have high cases. This is stated in the report – we just hope Estyn follow through in practice.”
