As many of you will be aware, UNICEF is NAHT’s chosen charity for 2009-10. I am writing to tell you about UNICEF’s response to the recent earthquake in Haiti.
The quake, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale, was centred about 14 miles south-west of the capital city, Port-au-Prince.
Children have been killed and injured; many are in desperate need of clean water, shelter and medical help. Early reports indicate a large number of casualties and widespread damage. UNICEF supplies have been delivered by road to the affected areas, and more supplies are due to be delivered to the country in the next few days.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. UNICEF urgently needs funds to deliver essential emergency supplies such as access to shelter, safe water and basic health care.
We would be extremely grateful if your school would consider doing a collection or organise a fundraising event for the children of Haiti. Your fundraising will directly help vulnerable children at risk - a gift of just £30 could provide three families with essential water kits.
You can download a fundraising pack by visiting www.unicef.org.uk/emergencyfundraising or order one by calling on 0844 801 2414.
If you are unable to fundraise but would like to make a donation to the appeal, you can donate online by visiting www.unicef.org.uk/haitinaht or send a cheque made payable to UNICEF, Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal, UNICEF UK, Donations Dept., Freepost NAT 20886, Billericay, CM12 0BR.
If your school is already taking part in UNICEF’s Day for Change, you can now choose to support the Haiti Children’s Emergency Appeal through your Day for Change. Go to www.dayforchange.org.uk or call 0844 801 2414 for more information.
On behalf of the children affected, thank you in advance for your support.
Our schools are wonderful wellsprings of support for children suffering in emergencies elsewhere. I do hope you can help in some way.
Warm regards,
Chris Howard
National President, NAHT
