NAHT confirms election of new General Secretary

Russell Hobby

The NAHT is pleased to confirm the election of Russell Hobby as its new General Secretary Designate. Russell will take over from our current General Secretary, Mick Brookes, from September 2010. He is currently head of research and marketing at the Hay Group management consultancy. He won the job from an initial field of 100 applicants.

NAHT President, Chris Howard, welcomed the appointment:

“Russell Hobby will bring a new dimension to the NAHT.  He is articulate, intelligent and understands the pressures of school management.  We are very pleased that one of the world’s largest school leadership organisations has been able to attract a dynamic and highly-skilled leader of its own.”

NAHT Vice President, Mike Welsh added:

“Russell will be a tough negotiator on behalf of school leaders and will expertly promote their vital continuing role in securing high standards and a creative curriculum for our schools and the young people in them. He will also strongly represent a new generation of school leaders and allow us to build our services to members in the very challenging times that lie ahead.

A product of state education and the University of Oxford, Russell has acquired his deep understanding of school and systems leadership whilst working with the Hay Group.  He has also worked with a number of education institutions including the National College and the General Teaching Council, and directly with hundreds of schools, and so is well-versed in the challenges that lie ahead.”

Retiring NAHT General Secretary Mick Brookes also welcomed the appointment of his successor:

“I am delighted that Russell Hobby's considerable expertise will be leading the NAHT in what is certain to be a tough time for school leaders. He will be a strong and informed voice for leadership.  I will be working closely with him to ensure that NAHT members continue to receive an excellent service in the months ahead.”

Russell Hobby, NAHT General Secretary Designate comments:

“School leaders hold themselves accountable for high standards. They deserve a system that frees them to achieve those standards, based on what they know is right for their school. They deserve fair and meaningful measures of success. Under these conditions, leadership can break down barriers and change lives, and it is these conditions that NAHT fights for. I’m proud to be joining NAHT to continue the fight and build on the outstanding work of Mick and the National Council.”
