"NAHT welcomes the decision by the Secretary of State to recognise the value of teacher assessment, we also welcome the decision to introduce a system of 'light touch' moderation in 2011. However, the concerns of my colleagues and parents are for children in Year 6 now. We still have a way to go before we reach the situation wherein:
- Children will have the best possible education in Y6, uncluttered by the need to rehearse SAT tests;
- Schools will be held to account for the broad sweep of their achievements including English and Maths;
- League tables of school performance are consigned to history and properly regarded as a significant barrier to school improvement.
NAHT will not rest until every child leaves their Primary School with information about their academic progress that is 100% accurate. Parents and teachers in the Secondary sector must receive precise information about the progress of individual children in order to properly engage in planning the next stages of their learning journey.
We are pleased to remain in negotiation with the Government on the reform of assessment processes and acknowledge the importance of progress to date.
There is, however, more to do and we look forward to further positive announcements over the next few months.
