The school leaders’ union, NAHT, is encouraging parents and children to take part in National Libraries Day tomorrow (Saturday 8 February).
The event rounds off a busy month of reading events in schools and libraries across the UK.
The NAHT welcomes the initiative as research shows children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers (Institute of Education 2013).
Russell Hobby, general secretary of NAHT (National Association of Head Teachers), said: “A love of reading is a gateway to a wider world. Families, schools and libraries all play a key role in promoting this.
“Research shows those who read for pleasure do significantly better at school and we congratulate library staff on their commitment. Their hard work is a great support to teaching staff in helping children develop vocabulary and improve their independent learning skills.”
