New guidance on school exclusions came into force on 5 January.
The guidance highlights an amendment to regulations, clarifying the day from which, in certain cases, suitable full-time education must be provided for pupils of compulsory school age who have been excluded. A governing body’s duty to arrange education from the sixth day of a fixed period exclusion would be triggered by consecutive fixed period exclusions totalling more than five days.
The guidance has also been updated in a small number of areas to provide clarification on:
- the power to exclude
- independent review panel processes
- governing body reconsideration
