The government sent copies of its revised safeguarding guidance to schools on 3 April accompanied by a letter from Michael Gove. It has immediate effect and replaces Safeguarding children and safer recruitment in schools.
The new document is a slimmer version of its predecessor. It does not include any new statutory duties and ought not to lead to schools having to make significant changes to existing safeguarding policies and procedures.
NAHT believes that this provides a good opportunity for schools to review existing policies and procedures to ensure that they are fully compliant with the ‘must’ and ’should’ aspects of the guidance.
The mailing to schools includes a pdf version of section one which is written for the schools’ workforce. The DfE advises that all should be encouraged to read this relatively short document, advice with which NAHT concurs.
The new guidance does include changes to arrangements for recruitment training but it should be noted that these changes do not take effect until 1 September 2014.
