Commenting on the murder of Jo Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen, Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT says: “We are deeply saddened by the murder of Jo Cox MP. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues. She was an MP truly committed to her local community and the wellbeing of children. It didn’t matter whether they were in her constituency or half way across the world; for her, the rights of the child were as important in Syria as they were in West Yorkshire.
“Schools leaders teach that violence is not acceptable, and that we should be tolerant, respectful and mindful of others. Those are the values schools promote every day, and the values Jo Cox lived and worked by. She will be sorely missed but her work will continue to inspire us all."
NAHT Kirklees branch president Catherine Jubbs said: “we are shocked and saddened by the news. Many in Kirklees will have known Jo and her family, through her work as an MP and involvement in the local community. Schools will be greatly saddened by the loss of our local champion.”
