Russell Hobby, general secretary of NAHT said: “The research from the Sutton Trust supports our belief that academy conversion is not a silver bullet guaranteed to deliver success.
“There are some great academies and some weak academies. We must celebrate the work of those chains which make a proven difference in the most challenging circumstances but we cannot brush over the limitations of others.
“Structural change is a means to an end, not an end itself. This government, like many others before it, appears to have forgotten this fact.
“Those academy chains which succeed maintain a clear focus and plan their growth carefully. The government's earlier efforts to encourage some chains to grow at a rapid pace seem increasingly misguided.”
