Developing professional standards framework for School Business Management

Last term, NAHT wrote to SBM members outlining the work the association is doing to support the development of a professional standards framework for SBMs by the National Association of School Business Managers (NASBM).

We have also invited members to give their views on each standard as it comes out for consultation. We believe a set of standards is vital to increasing the professional recognition for the role of school business managers in schools.

We have therefore provided feedback to each of the core activities and the functional areas that make up the standards. The core activities are: leading support services, strategy, governance (including risk management) and securing efficiency. The functional areas being described are: finance, procurement, infrastructure, human resources, marketing and policy. The framework will have four tiers within each section to range from entry level school business management through to the most senior level.

It’s been useful for NAHT to review the standards from the perspective of both our SBM members and that of head teachers who would use the standards to recruit and develop SBMs in their schools. NASBM plans to launch the standards at its conference in November 2015.
