Securing independent careers guidance

dfe careers guidance image

In March 2012 the DfE published statutory guidance relating to the duty (under the Education Act 2011) for schools to "secure access to independent and impartial careers guidance for their pupils from September 2012". NAHT shared the opinion with much of the educational world that the guidance was ambiguous. This concern was expressed in lobbying by careers associations and some concerns have been addressed and met in a guide published by the DfE.

We strongly advise you to read this document. Discussion with members indicates that schools are intent on maintaining the previous quality, depth and breadth of provision of careers education, information, advice and guidance despite the disappearance of the external structures supporting this work and the fact that schools are faced with funding such provision. NAHT remains concerned about the National Careers Service website. The guide commends this but the landing page does not feature any explicit link to provision for schools.
