The NAHT is taking action to rectify the English GCSE grading fiasco

The NAHT is taking action to rectify the English GCSE grading fiasco including: investigating the case for a legal challenge, collecting evidence on the GCSE English results, press campaign, meeting Ofqual, calling for an independent review and campaigning hard to bring fairness for this year's students.

As we hope you will have seen in the media, NAHT led on the reaction to the GCSE grading fiasco. But we also need action to rectify the unfairness. So, here's what we're doing at the moment:

  • we're collecting evidence on the GCSE English results. It's important that we get data from ALL schools, not just those whose results have been negatively affected. Please send your information to englishgcse@tes.co.uk (as TES have kindly agreed to collate this information for us).

  • we're working with a powerful coalition of other organisations to build a case to repudiate the Ofqual report - more information to follow soon;

  • we're investigating the case for a legal challenge - one of the reasons that we need your data;

  • we're continuing to raise the issues in the press to make sure that the issue is not allowed to disappear from sight;

  • we're meeting Ofqual (again) to view the data and information that they used to compile the disappointing report issued on Friday afternoon;

  • we are calling for an independent review of what happened this year, together with a regrading of the English GCSEs according to the January grade boundaries;

and, above all,

  • we are campaigning hard to bring fairness for this year's students. This is not really so much about schools, and not at all about the politics of grade inflation/deflation. It is about those students who will be denied jobs or further study as a result of an arbitrary change.
