Recruitment and retention within the teaching profession

Course description

Schools in all phases of education are finding the recruitment and retention of teachers and leaders to be problematic. A recent survey of our members found that 79 per cent who had advertised vacancies had reported problems recruiting for them. This one-day course will look at ways in which the profession can attract high-quality teachers and leaders, and retain them to provide outstanding learning opportunities for all pupils.

This course is organised into five sessions:

  1. The scale of the problem
  2. What are we already doing that is successful?
  3. What else do we need to do?
  4. Organisational culture and branding
  5. Developing and growing individuals

Aims of this course

This course aims to achieve the following:

  • examine how the culture of a school, its reputation and brand can attract high-quality candidates
  • reflect on successful methods of induction and identify professional development opportunities
  • explore staff involvement in coaching, mentoring and growing capacity in others
  • identify how middle leaders can be used to develop others and how they can be grown into senior leaders
  • recognise the need to sell the profession and develop recruitment and retention strategies

Objectives of this course

Through discussion, reflection and challenge, you’ll have the opportunity to do the following:
  • identify the scope of the problem and the barriers to successful recruitment and retention
  • share good practice and consider a range of strategies to address this problem for the profession
  • consider a range of appropriate collaborative and systemic strategies
  • develop an understanding of culture within an organisation and how this impacts the school’s reputation
  • reflect on the challenges of leading and developing others, and consider appropriate approaches to coaching and mentoring others
  • look at effective ways of branding and marketing the profession
