Bursars & School Business Managers professional and union support for less than £15 per month and no price increase until at least January 2011

Senior Leadership Team

Bursars and Business/Finance Managers are increasingly to be found in all types of schools with responsibility for school finances, often as a member of the strategic leadership team. Although the exact nature of the role will vary from school to school in the light of local circumstances, typically the post carries the responsibility for implementing the finance policies of the school, financial processing and budget monitoring on a day-to-day basis. Some individuals will do much more than this and support the head teacher by undertaking financial and resource management tasks.

Supporting you in your role

NAHT is an independent trade union and professional association representing over 28,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

All our members hold leadership positions in early years; primary; special and secondary schools; independent schools; sixth form and FE colleges; outdoor education centres; pupil referral units, social services establishments and other educational settings.

Many bursars and school business/finance managers will be part of the school’s senior leadership and/or paid on the leadership spine or equivalent basis and are therefore eligible for full membership of NAHT.

Benefits of membership

NAHT can support you in your role through:

  • Expert advice and information on health and safety, staffing, pay, budgeting, coping with local authorities and guidance in matters relating to the relationship between the headteacher/principal and the governing body;

  • Excellent publications, including Linking Finance To Your School Development Plan;

  • Influencing pay and conditions on a national basis through our membership of the Social Partnership;

  • Review and analysis of the Section 52 budget statement returns made by every local authority in England to compare local funding from one authority to another which helps us to answer queries from members and also put questions to the government;

  • Representation at Schools Funding Implementation Group. This is a DCSF group making national decisions on school funding;

  • Representation on Bursar Development Group which is managed by the TDA and is set up to develop and promote the role of bursars;
