Academies given Government go-ahead

Academy Approved

The Academies Bill gained approval in the house of commons today amidst controversy over the speed in which it has been introduced.

Due receive Royal Assent on Tuesday, the bill was challenged by some Liberal Democrat MPs who supported the view that it had been rushed through.

The National Union of Teachers has expressed 'distrust', while the the NASUWT has gone much further. warning that action could be taken over schools who push changes through.  The labour party has also expressed concern that schools could face legal action.

Russell Hobby, NAHT General Secretary designate, said "Policy lives or dies in the detail, not the grand vision. Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into the Dangerous Schools Act.

"That being said, if the detail lives up to the promise, we know that some heads will welcome greater freedom and flexibility. If they and their governors believe it is right, NAHT will support them in their journey to Academy status.

"We will also encourage them to remain part of the family of schools: collaborating with colleagues, consulting staff and parents and providing inclusive education. The profession should not, and I believe will not, let this usher in a fragmented or privatised education system. If a school achieves success in isolation, while others are struggling, it is a shallow victory."
