GTCE: The current position for employers

The announcement to abolish the GTC requires change to primary legislation by Parliament. Until such time as legislation is enacted and any transitional period provided for in legislation is completed, the GTC will continue to discharge all its statutory functions.

The GTC has also received an assurance that current duties and powers are likely to remain in force until at least the end of the current financial year, 31 March 2011.

Registration

Is there still value in checking your teachers against the register?
Along with its other core functions, the GTC continues to maintain the register of teachers in England.  It is important that employers continue to consult the register to check: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); registration status; and any restrictions.

Can you still use Employer Access online?
The Employer Access online service remains available to employers to check the registration and qualification details of their teachers until further notice.

Are induction results still going to be collected?
The induction process continues as normal. The GTC will write to the appropriate bodies on a termly basis to request the results for those teachers who have completed induction in the previous term. Until such time as legislation is passed to determine the future of the functions of the GTC, it will continue to carry out our statutory duties.

Is the information about teachers in your school accurate?
Yes. Until such time as new legislation is enacted, the GTC remains the professional body for teaching and this includes securely maintaining the register of approximately 600,000 teachers.

Salary deductions

The GTC has asked you to make salary deductions. Do you still have to action this? Yes. Teachers are still legally required to be registered with the GTC. The GTC continues to carry out its statutory duties until such time as new legislation is in place and the future of the functions of the GTC is determined. Therefore, teachers working in the maintained sector at any time since 1 April 2010 are required to be registered and the appropriate fee is due.

Referrals

Are you still required to refer cases to the GTC?
The GTC continues to carry out its statutory duties and employers of registered teachers are still required to refer a case when a teacher is dismissed because of misconduct or incompetence or leaves employment in circumstances where dismissal was a possibility.
